Prevention Of Cruelty To Children Officers Cap Badge

Lovely example of Bi metal cap badge, A very rare c1885 military style bimetal Cap Badge for a Prevention of Cruelty to Children Officer.
The cap badge is similar in shape and construction to the British Army soldiers cap badges worn since late Victorian times. It shows the emblem of a set of scales within a white metal oval band with PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO CHILDREN. The rest of the badge is in brass and is surmounted by a Ducal crown and below, a spray of laurel leaves and sword. The condition is perfect, with nice age toning.
The London Society for the Prevention to Cruelty to Children was founded in 1884 to draw government and public attention to the levels of deprivation and cruelty to children. In 1889 they changed their name to the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) having Queen Victoria as its patron and the Reverend Benjamin Waugh as director.
